Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, faced an unexpected interruption during his address on artificial intelligence and child safety at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting in New York on Wednesday. A teleprompter malfunctioned more than halfway through his remarks, forcing him to pause his speech.
Speaking about the critical risks posed by AI and the broader impact of social media and technology on young people, Harry had just stated, “We do not have years for what comes next,” when the screen he was reading from glitched and went blank. He appeared visibly confused, asking, “And that’s it?” before walking off the stage.
After an approximately 40-minute delay, Prince Harry returned to complete his speech, opening with a lighthearted remark about the incident. “AI got into my speech, so I was asked to come out and finish it,” he joked. According to GB News, he also quipped, “Interesting to see what it was so concerned about in part two.”
A Father's Plea for Online Safety
Prior to the technical hiccup, Prince Harry emphasized his perspective as a father and his engagement with numerous families affected by online dangers. “I come to this as a father, one who has shared countless conversations with other parents as they mourned the loss of their children to recklessly built technology,” he stated.
He recalled his appearance at the same event two years prior, when he announced The Parents’ Network. This initiative, launched with Meghan Markle through their Archewell foundation, connects with families whose children have suffered serious harm or died by suicide due to social media experiences.
“As a father, I will remind you of the faces that accompanied me the last time I stood before you,” Harry said, as images of children were displayed behind him. He highlighted the escalating issue: “Hundreds have become thousands. Thousands of parents grieving their children. Millions of families living with the consequences of a digital revolution that moved faster than our willingness to protect them.”
Urgent Warnings on AI and Accountability
Prince Harry drew a stark comparison between past and present technological challenges. “Social media learned how to capture our attention. AI is learning how to enter our relationships,” he warned, adding, “It doesn’t just want your attention; it wants your attachment.” He stressed the urgency, stating, “We have spent years trying to loosen technology’s grip on children’s attention. We cannot wait another decade to discover what happens when technology has a grip on their relationships.”
He called for greater transparency, robust standards, and clear accountability in the development of new technologies. “The good news: we proved pressure works,” Harry continued. “The bad news: we proved how long we are willing to wait.” He cautioned against unchecked promises from tech developers, asserting, “technology and the humans in charge of it are going to promise us the world” and “they must be accountable for the world they actually deliver.”
Harry cited recent legal action in the United States as a sign of progress, noting that a New Mexico court in early August ordered Meta to pay nearly $1 billion to address harm done to young people and their mental health from its platforms. This, he observed, offered “Some of the clearest acknowledgements yet that the harm is real and accountability is possible,” as reported by GB News.
