Political strategist and Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has achieved his first electoral success as a candidate, winning the Bankipur Assembly by-election. This landmark victory marks the Jan Suraaj Party's maiden representation in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, ending the Bharatiya Janata Party's three-decade dominance in the constituency.
Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by a margin of over 19,000 votes, a result widely interpreted as a significant political setback for the BJP ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
Kishor Urges BJP to Rethink Bihar Leadership
Following the announcement of the results, Prashant Kishor described the BJP's defeat in Bankipur as a crucial 'wake-up call' for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing reporters, Kishor urged the BJP's central leadership to reconsider its leadership structure in Bihar.
He specifically suggested that the BJP replace Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary with a 'decent person' to improve its prospects in the state. Kishor emphasized that if the BJP wishes to continue with an Other Backward Classes (OBC) chief minister, they should select 'someone who is educated and has a clean record.' He clarified that his criticism was aimed at the BJP's state leadership rather than the party itself, stating that voters desire better governance, job opportunities, improved education, and overall development.
No Alliance with NDA or INDIA Bloc
Amidst speculation that his Bankipur victory might push Jan Suraaj towards an alliance with either the BJP-led NDA or the opposition INDIA bloc, Kishor firmly rejected such notions. 'We shall have no alliance. Our alliance shall be with the people of Bihar,' he stated unequivocally.
Kishor claimed that many supporters from the BJP, Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) covertly backed Jan Suraaj in the bypoll due to their disillusionment with their respective parties. He extended his gratitude not only to common citizens but also to those from other parties who supported Jan Suraaj despite not being members.
Historic Upset in BJP Stronghold
The Bankipur constituency had been a BJP stronghold since 1995, making Kishor's win one of the most significant political upsets in Bihar in recent memory. The by-election was necessitated after former BJP MLA Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha.
