A police head constable lost his life in a suspected terror attack on Wednesday in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. The incident, which saw suspected terrorists open fire on a police deployment, took place around 12:30 pm near Lal Chowk in Anantnag town.
Head constable Aashiq Hussain, a resident of Beerwah in the Budgam district, sustained critical injuries during the assault. He was immediately rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Heightened Security for Amarnath Yatra
The attack comes despite significantly heightened security across the Kashmir Valley, implemented for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. Thousands of pilgrims are currently traveling through Jammu and Kashmir, necessitating extensive surveillance and preventive measures by security agencies.
Officials have been particularly vigilant, utilizing advanced technology to bolster security. Earlier this month, Anantnag Police successfully detained an alleged terror overground worker. This individual was flagged by a facial recognition system installed at the Nunwan base camp during a routine screening, highlighting the role of technology in strengthening the region's multi-layered security framework.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. The confirmation of this incident as a terror strike would mark the first such event since a previous attack in Pahalgam, further intensifying concerns about security in the region.
