On Thursday, October 1, 2026, Captain Machchhar successfully foiled an attempt by his co-pilot to crash Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
In a post on X, PM Modi lauded Machchhar's courage, stating, “Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO. In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy. India is proud of Captain Machchhar.”
Incident Unfolds Aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073
The harrowing incident occurred on Wednesday aboard the Boeing 737, carrying approximately 174 passengers. Mid-flight, the Omani co-pilot allegedly stabbed Captain Machchhar in the cockpit and attempted to seize control of the aircraft. Israeli officials described this as a deliberate attempt to crash the plane.
Despite sustaining serious injuries and significant blood loss, Captain Machchhar valiantly resisted the attack. He managed to unlock the cockpit door, providing crucial time for passengers and crew to intervene. They rushed in, subdued the attacker, and brought the situation under control after the plane briefly plunged thousands of feet.
The flight was subsequently diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia for an emergency landing. Both pilots were hospitalized, with Captain Machchhar reported to be in stable condition and undergoing treatment.
Global Leaders and Public Salute Pilot's Heroism
The bravery of Captain Machchhar quickly garnered international recognition. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed his “extraordinary bravery,” emphasizing that he prevented a “catastrophic mid-air disaster.” US President Donald Trump also commended the Indian pilot, calling him a “hero” and speculating the attacker was “perhaps a terrorist or perhaps a whack job.”
The story resonated deeply in India, where journalists, actors, and sports personalities shared messages of admiration and prayers across social media, hailing him as a “real-life hero.” Many compared his actions to cinematic bravery, while others highlighted his “duty first” mindset, citing past interviews where he discussed flight safety protocols.
