Social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham, widely known as 'PadMan', has announced that he has been listed as a nominee for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu, India, gained international recognition for his innovative work in making affordable sanitary pads accessible to women in rural villages across India.
His life story and dedication to menstrual hygiene also inspired the 2018 Bollywood film PadMan, starring Akshay Kumar, which brought further attention to his significant social contributions.
Details of the Nomination Claim
Speaking to news agency ANI, Muruganantham expressed his initial disbelief regarding the nomination. He clarified the stringent process, stating, "For the Nobel Prize, you cannot submit your name, nor can your friends or family. It has to be a third party." He further elaborated that a Dean from Aravind Eye Hospital in Pondicherry, along with American teams working there, submitted his name. "It was accepted within 24 hours... I'm really proud," he added.
The Nobel Peace Prize Process
The Nobel Peace Prize nomination and selection process is an extensive eight-month procedure. The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee meticulously reviews all nominations, gradually shortening the list to a handful of candidates. These selected individuals are then assessed by independent experts who prepare detailed reports for the committee's consideration. The committee retains the flexibility to reconsider candidates at any stage, provided there is a valid nomination.
Muruganantham's claim brings renewed focus to his groundbreaking work in public health and highlights the rigorous yet impactful journey of Nobel Peace Prize nominations.
