Union ministers J.P. Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh held a meeting with activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday evening. The meeting, which lasted over an hour, addressed several critical issues, including Wangchuk's health and the ongoing protests against the NEET examination.
Key Discussions
During the closed-door discussion, Minister Nadda inquired about Sonam Wangchuk's health condition. Both ministers conveyed the government's willingness to initiate a parliamentary debate on the protests concerning alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Furthermore, the government assured Wangchuk that appropriate steps would be taken to implement country-wide educational reforms.
The ministers also urged Wangchuk to appeal to students to maintain faith in the government's processes and to avoid unlawful actions during their protests.
Wangchuk's Condition and Hospital Transfer
Sonam Wangchuk was transferred to Medanta Hospital from Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday evening, following a Delhi High Court order dated July 21, 2026. He had been on an indefinite fast since June 28, protesting alleged examination irregularities.
Upon his transfer, Wangchuk was admitted to ICU 8 at Medanta, where he is under the care of Dr. Sushila Kataria, an internal medicine specialist. Safdarjung Hospital confirmed his discharge, noting that his vital parameters were stable, though pancytopenia persisted and his serum potassium level was 3.4 mEq/L. All medical records were shared with Medanta to ensure continuity of care.
The High Court's directive emphasized Wangchuk's fundamental rights under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution to choose his hospital. The court also ordered Medanta to form a specialist team for continuous monitoring and treatment. Security around Medanta Hospital was heightened following the court's order.
Government Engagement on NEET Protests
Prior to meeting Wangchuk, Dr. Jitendra Singh had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah for over four hours. Singh also engaged with Rahul Gandhi, who was protesting outside the Prime Minister's residence. Singh stated that the government had initially agreed to Rahul Gandhi's demand for a parliamentary discussion on NEET but noted that Gandhi subsequently shifted his stance by demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
