Modi, Albanese to Discuss Uranium, Defence, Trade in Melbourne Summit

· · 2 min read

Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese are set to co-chair the 3rd Annual Summit in Melbourne, focusing on critical minerals, trade, defence, and security cooperation. A uranium export agreement is reportedly on the agenda.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese are scheduled to co-chair the 3rd Annual Summit in Melbourne on Thursday, July 9, 2026. The high-level discussions are expected to significantly advance the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with critical minerals, trade, defence, and security cooperation topping the agenda.

Key Discussions: Uranium, Trade, and Defence

A key focus of the summit is the potential finalisation of an agreement for Australia to export uranium to India. While a nuclear cooperation pact was signed between the two nations in 2014, uranium exports have faced limitations due to concerns surrounding peaceful use. Australian media outlets have widely reported on the likelihood of this agreement being cemented during the current visit.

Prime Minister Albanese indicated that a series of joint announcements would be made following his discussions with PM Modi, stating he would elaborate further after their talks. Beyond uranium, the leaders will delve into broader trade relationships, aiming to strengthen India's position as Australia's fifth-largest trading partner. Defence and security cooperation are also crucial elements, building on the strategic alignment between the Indo-Pacific partners.

Modi's Arrival and Diaspora Engagement

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Melbourne late Wednesday night, receiving a ceremonial red-carpet welcome and a guard of honour. Posting on social media platform X, he expressed optimism, stating, "This visit will add vigour to the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."

In addition to the official summit and meetings with leading Australian business executives, PM Modi is slated to address thousands of members of the Indian community at a major event in one of Melbourne's largest sports stadiums on Thursday evening. Such large diaspora gatherings have been a hallmark of Modi's overseas visits, including previous events in the UK, US, and Australia.

Context of the Three-Nation Tour

Melbourne marks the second leg of Prime Minister Modi's three-nation tour. Prior to Australia, he concluded a three-day visit to Indonesia, where he held extensive talks with President Prabowo Subianto. That visit saw the signing of 14 agreements across various sectors, including agriculture, defence, critical minerals, and maritime security. Notably, a deal involving the BrahMos cruise missile system was also part of the outcomes from the Indonesia leg.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal affirmed that PM Modi would engage with diverse stakeholders in Australia to deepen the multifaceted partnership across sectors of mutual interest.
