Following a high-profile bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, US Senator Marco Rubio delivered a direct warning to nations maintaining financial ties with Tehran.
US Issues Stark Warning on Iran Sanctions
Speaking on The Brian Kilmeade Show, Senator Rubio made it clear that while sovereign nations have the right to chart their own foreign policy, any country aiding Iran in evading US sanctions would face severe consequences. "No country should be helping Iran evade sanctions. No country should be out there helping them create mechanisms by which they can generate revenue that they will then use to sponsor terrorism and try to build a nuclear weapon," Rubio stated, adding a direct threat: "And if countries decide to do that, then we're going to have to sanction them too."
This stern admonition comes amid the Trump administration’s aggressive "Operation Economic Outcast," launched on August 24 by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The campaign, branded an "economic D-Day," aims to sever Tehran's financial lifelines.
Modi-Pezeshkian Discussions on Trade and Regional Stability
Despite the looming threat of US economic pressure, the Bishkek dialogue between PM Modi and President Pezeshkian focused on expanding and diversifying bilateral trade. Discussions also addressed the escalating crisis in West Asia, with a particular emphasis on safeguarding commercial shipping lanes and seafarers.
"Met President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek. Reiterated our commitment to strengthening India's long standing friendship with Iran across diverse sectors. We want to expand and diversify our trade basket in the times to come. We had a discussion on the prevailing situation in the region. India will continue to support all efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace," PM Modi shared in a statement following the meeting.
The Ministry of External Affairs underscored India's deep concern over regional instability, advocating for the freedom of navigation and commerce. New Delhi stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure, including commercial shipping, must remain unharmed and reiterated its stance that all regional disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Iran’s Response and Critique of US Policy
President Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for India's engagement and urged New Delhi to leverage its global diplomatic influence to de-escalate regional tensions. He also took direct aim at Washington's approach.
"From the very beginning of our administration, our efforts have been focused on ensuring peace and security and resolving issues through dialogue and negotiations," Pezeshkian remarked. "Unfortunately, instead of making use of diplomatic mechanisms, the Americans have chosen the path of war, insecurity and imposing their will through force."
Pezeshkian further asserted Iran's commitment to its international legal agreements, stating, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has remained committed to the obligations it has undertaken within the framework of the agreements, but unfortunately, the American side has failed to fulfill its commitments." Tehran’s Foreign Ministry echoed the President’s sentiments, dismissing Washington's aggressive posture as "gross lawlessness and systematic bullying" and maintaining that Iran can withstand the pressure without abandoning key international trade partnerships.
