Lt Gen Dhillon Defends Army Captain's Viral Helicopter Proposal Amid Protocol Debate

· · 2 min read

Retired Lt Gen KJS Dhillon has publicly supported Army Captain Bharat Bhardwaj, whose viral proposal next to a military helicopter sparked a protocol debate. Dhillon dismissed security concerns, defending the romantic gesture as a natural expression of love.

Army Captain's Viral Proposal Sparks Debate

Captain Bharat Bhardwaj recently captured widespread attention after a video of him proposing to his fiancée, Aarushi, went viral. The romantic gesture occurred following his graduation from the Combat Army Aviation Training School (CAATS) in Nashik, where he knelt beside a stationary Cheetah helicopter to present a ring.

While many online celebrated the heartwarming moment, others quickly raised questions regarding military decorum, adherence to protocol, and potential security implications of using military equipment in such a personal display. Reports surfaced suggesting that the Army might seek an explanation from Captain Bhardwaj concerning a possible breach of established guidelines.

Retired Lt Gen Dhillon Backs Young Officer

In response to the growing online debate and criticism, Lieutenant General (Retd) Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon, a former Northern Army Commander, publicly came out in strong support of Captain Bhardwaj. Taking to social media, Dhillon dismissed concerns of a security breach and staunchly defended the young officer's actions.

"In the Army we say 'Youngster nahi karega, toh kaun karega'," Dhillon wrote, emphasizing that if young officers are not allowed to express love, who else would? He highlighted the paradox of expecting soldiers to sacrifice their lives for the nation while denying them the expression of personal affection.

Addressing Security Concerns

Lt Gen Dhillon firmly rejected suggestions that the proposal constituted a security lapse. He pointed out that military equipment is frequently displayed during 'Know Your Army' exhibitions nationwide, where civilians, including students, regularly pose for photographs with pride and affection for the armed forces. "So, please don't bring in the national security angle into this," he urged.

Upholding Professionalism and Personal Expression

Speaking to news agencies, Dhillon articulated that a display of love does not detract from an officer's professional capabilities or commitment to duty. He asserted that expressing personal affection, whether on social media or otherwise, does not diminish discipline but rather showcases a youthful spirit. "Let the young soldier do his national duty with pride and honour," he added.

Ongoing Debate and Official Silence

The remarks from Lt Gen Dhillon have further fueled an ongoing online discussion about the boundaries between military protocol and individual expression. As of now, the Indian Army has not issued any official public statement regarding the incident or the subsequent debate.
