Heavy rainfall swept across Kolkata and several neighboring regions on Saturday, as a low-pressure system positioned over the northwest Bay of Bengal continued to influence weather patterns across West Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a new forecast, predicting further heavy rainfall in parts of the state, especially North Bengal, through Sunday, September 13.
Low-Pressure System Intensifies
According to the IMD, the low-pressure area intensified on Friday over the northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh before shifting towards the northwest Bay of Bengal. This weather system has brought widespread precipitation and unsettled conditions to various parts of West Bengal.
Kolkata Experiences Significant Downpour
Kolkata itself witnessed light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in many localities. The IMD reported that winds could reach speeds of 30-40 kmph in some areas. The city recorded a substantial 45.3 mm of rainfall within the 24 hours leading up to Saturday. Intense spells of rain in several areas have sparked concerns about potential waterlogging and disruptions to daily life and movement.
However, weather conditions are anticipated to gradually improve, with the intensity of rainfall expected to lessen starting from Sunday.
Heavy Rain Alert for North Bengal
The IMD has specifically issued a warning for heavy rainfall in parts of North Bengal. Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri are projected to receive significant showers on Saturday, while Cooch Behar and Alipurduar may experience heavy rainfall on Sunday. Residents in areas prone to waterlogging and weather-related disturbances are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore
In light of the prevailing weather system and rough sea conditions, the IMD has strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along the West Bengal coast on Saturday. Authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation as the low-pressure system tracks further across the Bay of Bengal. While a decrease in rainfall activity is expected from Sunday, residents in all alert areas should continue to follow official weather updates and local advisories.
