JODHPUR, INDIA – The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) contingent has landed in Jodhpur, India, ahead of Exercise Veer Guardian 2026, marking a significant step in the deepening defense cooperation between New Delhi and Tokyo.
Two JASDF C-2 transport aircraft touched down at Air Force Station Jodhpur on September 5, 2026, bringing personnel and equipment for the second edition of the joint air combat exercise. The exercise is scheduled to run from September 9 to September 22, 2026.
Boosting Interoperability and Tactical Proficiency
Exercise Veer Guardian 2026 is designed to enhance interoperability, operational synergy, and mutual understanding between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the JASDF. The training will focus on improving the tactical proficiency of participating units through complex air-combat maneuvering scenarios.
Japan is deploying three F-2A fighter aircraft from the 8th Air Wing at Tsuiki Air Base, along with approximately 110 personnel for the exercise. This deployment offers a valuable opportunity for both air forces to exchange operational experience and refine their ability to operate effectively alongside each other.
JASDF Chief of Staff Takehiro Morita emphasized the exercise's importance, stating, "It will be a great opportunity to further deepen mutual understanding and relationship of trust."
Expanding India-Japan Defense Partnership
This exercise unfolds against a backdrop of steadily expanding defense cooperation between India and Japan. In August, Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi visited India for talks with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, where they agreed to broaden collaboration in critical areas, including maritime security and the Indo-Pacific region.
Both ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and exchanged perspectives on the evolving regional and international security environment. Veer Guardian 2026 is viewed as a crucial pillar in the Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership, contributing to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
The deployment of Japanese fighter aircraft to India facilitates direct training and experience sharing, further strengthening the institutional and operational links between the Indian Air Force and the JASDF.
