Iran has formally invited prominent Indian Congress leaders, including party President Mallikarjun Kharge, to attend the burial ceremonies of its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Senior Congress figures Salman Khurshid and Pawan Khera have also received invitations for the multi-day events, scheduled from July 5 to 9.
The ceremonies are set to take place across several key Iranian cities, including Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, marking the final respects for the leader who governed Iran for three decades until his death on February 28.
Congress Considers Delegation for Khamenei Burial
Salman Khurshid, who leads the Congress party's foreign affairs department, confirmed that internal discussions are underway regarding the party's participation. He stated that the Congress president is in the process of finalizing the composition of the delegation that will travel to Iran.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's passing occurred on February 28, coinciding with the initial day of extensive US and Israeli air strikes on Tehran, according to reports. His long tenure as Supreme Leader shaped much of modern Iranian history and its foreign policy.
India's Official Representation
Beyond the political party invitations, India will also be represented by an official delegation at the significant events. The Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, along with Bihar Governor Ata Hasnain, are designated to attend on behalf of the Indian government.
Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had also extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the solemn ceremonies. The Congress leadership is anticipated to make a final decision on its delegation in the coming days.
