India's Mangrove Cover Grows by 1.18 Lakh Hectares, Second-Highest Globally

India has expanded its mangrove cover by 1.18 lakh hectares over the past four decades, securing the world's second-highest net gain after Australia. This growth highlights successful conservation, restoration, and natural regeneration efforts.

A recent Global Mangrove Watch (GMW) report reveals that India has achieved a net gain of 1.18 lakh hectares (118,000 hectares) in mangrove cover between 1985 and 2025. This significant expansion positions India as the world's second-best performer in mangrove conservation, trailing only Australia.

Released on World Mangrove Day (July 26), the GMW 4.1 assessment offers encouraging news globally, estimating a net worldwide increase of 47,707 hectares of mangrove forests over the same four-decade period. This positive trend challenges long-held concerns about rapid mangrove decline, underscoring the effectiveness of improved conservation initiatives, natural regeneration, and ecological restoration.

India's substantial gain places it ahead of other nations that also recorded notable increases, including Pakistan, the Philippines, and Senegal. These findings indicate a slowdown in deforestation and degradation rates, with restoration projects and natural regrowth yielding measurable results.

Mangroves are salt-tolerant forests thriving along tropical and subtropical coastlines. Their expansion in India is crucial given their multifaceted benefits to the environment and coastal communities.

Why Mangroves Are Vital

Mangroves are increasingly recognized as one of the planet's most valuable ecosystems, particularly in the global fight against climate change. They act as natural buffers, protecting coastal communities from cyclones, storm surges, and erosion, while simultaneously supporting fisheries, biodiversity, and local livelihoods.

Beyond their protective role, mangroves are highly efficient carbon sinks. They possess the remarkable ability to store carbon at rates up to four times higher per hectare than terrestrial forests, making them indispensable for achieving global climate goals. Furthermore, healthy mangrove ecosystems provide essential breeding grounds for various fish and marine species, contributing to food security and sustaining millions of coastal residents.

Some gains, particularly in riverine and deltaic regions, may be inadvertently linked to upstream human activities such as mining, deforestation, and land-use changes that alter sediment and water flows. In certain instances, mangrove growth could be a byproduct of environmental degradation occurring elsewhere.

Globally, the picture remains mixed. Countries like Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Nigeria have continued to experience significant long-term mangrove losses, although Indonesia's mangrove cover has shown greater stability since 2015.

Advanced Technology for Better Monitoring

The latest Global Mangrove Watch update represents a significant technological leap. Its baseline mangrove maps now offer a 10-meter resolution, providing six times more spatial detail than previous versions. Additionally, change maps charting mangrove loss and recovery are available from 1985 to 2025 at a 30-meter resolution.

With an estimated 93% mapping accuracy, this advanced platform empowers governments, researchers, and conservation groups to precisely identify restoration opportunities, detect illegal clearing through monthly alerts, and monitor mangrove health with unprecedented precision. The report ultimately underscores that while restoration efforts are yielding results, the protection of the world's remaining 147,283 square kilometers of mangroves is paramount for climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.
