India Condemns Black Sea Attack, Calls for Diplomacy; All 3 Indian Crew Safe

· · 2 min read

India's Ministry of External Affairs condemned the recent attack on the commercial vessel MV Royad Mammadov in the Black Sea, which resulted in two foreign seafarer deaths. The MEA confirmed all three Indian crew members aboard are safe and receiving medical attention in Romania.

India has strongly condemned the recent attack on the commercial vessel MV Royad Mammadov in the Black Sea, an incident that tragically resulted in the deaths of two foreign seafarers and injuries to several crew members, including Indian nationals.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Tuesday that all three Indian citizens aboard the vessel are safe and receiving medical attention, thanks to the swift response of Romanian authorities. The Indian Embassy in Romania had previously confirmed their safety on Monday, providing updates on their condition.

Concerns Over Global Shipping Safety

In its statement, the MEA expressed grave concern regarding attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers. The ministry highlighted that targeting international waterways severely undermines global commerce and the welfare of people worldwide.

"We continue to call for dialogue and diplomacy to bring an end to the ongoing conflicts," the Ministry stated, reiterating India's stance on resolving international disputes peacefully.

To further address maritime security, India and Liberia jointly launched a 25-nation "Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers" during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2026. This initiative aims to protect merchant crews and commercial shipping from targeted attacks, underscoring the international commitment to safeguarding vital trade routes.

Indian Embassy's Swift Response

The Indian Embassy in Romania has been actively involved in ensuring the well-being of its citizens. Following the attack, the Embassy confirmed that while one Indian national sustained injuries, all three are in good health and receiving necessary care at Constanța County Hospital. Ambassador Manoj Mohapatra personally spoke with the Indian nationals and the hospital's Chief Physician, assuring them of all possible assistance and support.

The Embassy maintained close contact with relevant authorities to gather details and provide comprehensive support to the Indian crew members throughout the incident.
