Opposition Leaders Convene in New Delhi
The INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) bloc, a coalition of 23 opposition parties, held its first formal meeting in over a year on Monday at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. The gathering marks a crucial moment for the alliance, aiming to project unity, resolve internal differences, and outline a strategy for upcoming state elections and the pivotal 2029 Lok Sabha general elections.
Prominent leaders from across the political spectrum were expected to attend, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress, Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. While 23 parties confirmed their participation, some, like the DMK and AAP, cited scheduling conflicts but reiterated their opposition to the ruling Modi government's policies. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is anticipated to formally join the alliance.

The meeting's agenda is comprehensive, focusing on several critical areas. A primary objective is to forge a coordinated strategy for the forthcoming state assembly elections, which are seen as vital precursors to the 2029 national polls. Discussions are also slated to cover pressing national issues such as electoral reforms, alleged misuse of central investigative agencies against opposition figures, persistently rising prices, unemployment, and broader economic anxieties affecting the populace.
Specifically, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is expected to bring forward concerns regarding alleged attacks on its leaders in West Bengal, seeking solidarity and support from its alliance partners.
Internal Frictions Surface Ahead of Talks
Despite the push for unity, the INDIA bloc convenes amidst palpable internal frictions. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) — CPI(M) — is set to seek clarification from the Congress regarding accusations of an understanding between Left parties and the BJP during the Kerala Assembly elections. CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby had previously flagged these allegations in a letter to Congress President Kharge, deeming them inconsistent with the spirit of opposition cooperation.
CPI general secretary D Raja underscored the long-overdue nature of the formal meeting, stating that Left parties would use the platform to voice their concerns directly. The ruling BJP quickly seized on these internal disputes, with party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla asserting that the differences among alliance partners exposed a fundamental lack of unity and shared direction.
Significance and Future Outlook
This meeting is the first official gathering of the INDIA bloc since June 2024, when leaders last met before the Lok Sabha elections. An informal strategy dinner hosted by Rahul Gandhi in August 2025 previously addressed concerns over electoral processes, including voter roll revisions. Congress leader Pramod Tiwari emphasized the meeting's importance as an act of political consolidation.
Formed as a broad front against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of the 2024 general elections, the INDIA bloc enters this crucial discussion following a series of setbacks in various state elections. Political observers will closely watch whether the alliance emerges from the Constitution Club with a renewed sense of purpose or if the existing fractures will be further exposed, impacting its viability for future electoral challenges.
