Delhi residents are bracing for more moderate rainfall and cooler temperatures this week, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Recent heavy showers have brought a welcome respite from the heat but have also led to significant waterlogging, causing disruptions for commuters across the capital and the wider National Capital Region.
IMD Forecasts Continued Showers and Cooler Days
The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in isolated areas across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand for September 6. This weather pattern is influenced by a low-pressure area currently situated over southwest Uttar Pradesh and its adjoining regions, which is expected to move east-northeastwards over the next 24 hours.
On September 6, the New Delhi-Safdarjung weather station recorded 30.0 mm of rainfall within the past 24 hours. The maximum temperature dipped significantly to 27.6°C, which is 6.5°C below the seasonal normal, while the minimum temperature was 24.6°C, 1°C below normal. Humidity levels remained high at 98 per cent throughout the day.
Weekly Outlook: Moderate Rain and Stable Temperatures
The IMD's seven-day forecast indicates generally cloudy skies and moderate rain for Delhi on Sunday. Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 32°C and a minimum of around 25°C. For September 7 and 8, partly cloudy conditions are expected, with maximum temperatures around 34°C and minimums of 24°C and 25°C respectively.
Looking further ahead, September 9 and 10 are forecast to have maximum temperatures of 33°C and minimums of 26°C and 25°C, with "No Warning" issued for these days. Similar conditions are expected on September 11, with a maximum of 33°C and a minimum of 25°C, also with "No Warning."
Waterlogging Concerns Amidst Relief
While the rainfall has provided much-needed relief from the heat, prompting residents to enjoy outdoor activities near landmarks like India Gate, it has also created challenges. Several areas experienced waterlogging, including light accumulation observed in Geeta Colony and Akbar Road on Saturday morning.
Beyond Delhi, key stretches in Gurugram within the National Capital Region also faced significant waterlogging, leading to traffic disruptions and commuter difficulties.
Official Response to Drainage Issues
In response to the prevalent waterlogging, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conducted a surprise inspection of Sadhbhavana Park and its surrounding roads on Saturday. She engaged with officials and on-ground staff to assess the drainage arrangements and the extent of water accumulation in the area.
Chief Minister Gupta issued directives for the immediate deployment of pumps and other essential resources to affected areas, emphasizing the need for prompt and efficient drainage of accumulated water to mitigate commuter inconvenience.
