All Indian Himalayan states are inherently vulnerable to hazards like flash floods, according to Dr. Ashim Sattar, a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and an expert on outburst floods. His warning comes as the region grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, including rapidly altering cryospheric components.
Growing Glacial Lake Risks
Dr. Sattar emphasized that while the precise timing and nature of future disasters remain uncertain without extensive scientific investigation, the underlying risks are undeniable. He noted that the eastern Himalayas already host numerous glacial lakes that have reached their maximum extent, while the western and central parts of the range still have considerable scope for lake expansion.
Crucially, Dr. Sattar pointed out that even in the Indian Himalayas, the number and size of glacial lakes are increasing, a direct consequence of retreating glaciers. This phenomenon creates a heightened risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), which can unleash devastating torrents downstream.
The Role of the Cryosphere
The cryosphere, encompassing water in its solid forms like glaciers and permafrost, plays a critical role in these hazards. As glaciers melt, they form glacial lakes, which, if their natural dams fail, can cause catastrophic flooding. Dr. Sattar cited a recent glacier detachment leading to a debris flow in the broader Himalayan region as an example of such a trigger.
Permafrost, another widespread cryospheric component in the Himalayas, also presents significant risks. However, monitoring its stability is exceptionally challenging, leading to a gap in scientific understanding and quantification of its potential impacts.
Challenges in Monitoring and Research
Despite direct evidence of climate impacts on the Himalayan cryosphere, Dr. Sattar highlighted a critical deficit in scientific studies and quantified data. The sheer vastness and rugged terrain of the Himalayas make comprehensive monitoring efforts extremely difficult. Furthermore, mountain ranges both within and outside India could eventually drain into the Indian subcontinent, expanding the scope of potential downstream risks.
“Everything – these lakes, glaciers, and permafrost – are all hazards. Unless they’re triggered, they would not cause damage,” Dr. Sattar stated, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced research and monitoring to understand and mitigate these growing threats.
