Kalyan Bainsla, the man accused in a high-profile hit-and-run case on Gurugram's Golf Course Road, has been arrested in Dausa, Rajasthan. Bainsla, who had been absconding since the incident on Sunday morning, is now expected to face charges that include attempt to murder.
The Gurugram Police added the serious charge to the First Information Report (FIR) following public outcry, viral videos of the incident, and persistent appeals from the victim's family. Shivani Chauhan, also known as Sia, was riding her bike with a group when Bainsla's car allegedly rammed her from the side, throwing her several meters.
Incident Details and Victim's Account
According to Sia, Bainsla's car began following her group on Sunday. She alleged that the occupants appeared intoxicated. When she requested them to maintain a safe distance, the car reportedly accelerated and intentionally collided with her bike, causing her to skid along the road.
Senior Gurugram Police officer Sandeep Malik had previously indicated that videos of the incident appeared to show a deliberate act. He stated that the viral footage clearly suggested Bainsla "intentionally" hit the biker with an apparent intent to cause harm.
Attempt to Murder Charge Added
The decision to add the attempt-to-murder charge came after Sia and her family publicly questioned the initial police response. They highlighted the existence of video evidence and expressed frustration over the delay in Bainsla's arrest and the omission of the grave charge. Sia's father and brother, among other family members, directly approached the police to advocate for stronger action.
Conflicting Narratives
In an interview with India Today TV, Kalyan Bainsla admitted his car collided with Sia's bike but denied any intention to hit her. He claimed he lost control near a U-turn and did not stop immediately due to fear of being attacked by the group of bikers. Bainsla also alleged that the bikers had repeatedly overtaken his vehicle, changed speeds frequently, and "pinched" his car by riding too close.
"They were repeatedly coming in front of me and then slowing down the bike," Bainsla stated, questioning why he would intentionally hit anyone. He also asserted he was unaware the biker was a woman and expressed concern for her well-being.
Conversely, Sia maintained that the car deliberately followed her and that the collision was intentional. She criticized the Gurugram Police's handling of law and order, pointing out that while bikers are often penalized, four-wheeler drivers involved in rash driving appear to face less scrutiny. Sia emphasized that her purpose in sharing the video was to deter others who might believe they can commit such acts without consequence. She reiterated that the video clearly shows an intentional hit, which she considers attempted murder.
