In a deeply symbolic and impactful electoral outcome, Ratna Debnath, the mother of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024, has won the Panihati Assembly seat in West Bengal. Debnath, making her political debut for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), triumphed over Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Tirthankar Ghosh by a significant margin of 28,836 votes.
The RG Kar case had sparked widespread national outrage, drawing parallels to the Nirbhaya gang-rape in Delhi in 2012. The state administration's initial handling of the case faced severe criticism, fueling public anger that never fully dissipated. This backdrop set the stage for Debnath's candidacy in Panihati, a traditional TMC stronghold in North 24 Parganas.
BJP's Strategic Move in TMC Territory
Ratna Debnath's nomination was a calculated political move by the BJP to challenge the TMC on its home turf. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself addressed a rally in Panihati ahead of the second phase of voting, standing alongside Debnath and vowing to ensure women's safety in the state. This powerful symbolism resonated with voters, proving devastatingly effective on election day.
Debnath secured 87,977 votes, while her opponent, Tirthankar Ghosh, polled 59,141 votes. After her victory, she dedicated the mandate to the people of Panihati and to Prime Minister Modi, stating, "This victory is the victory of the people of Panihati, of the entire Bengal. I dedicate this victory to Prime Minister Modi. I have been able to free the people from the misgovernance of the Ghosh family. I thank the people; I could not have done this alone."
Women's Safety as a Defining Narrative
The BJP strategically leveraged the RG Kar incident to counter the TMC's long-standing voter base among women, built through direct benefit schemes like Lakshmir Bhandar. By spotlighting women's safety, the BJP crafted a defining counter-narrative for this election. Throughout her campaign, Debnath pledged to push for a deeper investigation into the RG Kar case, aiming to hold all those involved in what she described as a "larger conspiracy" accountable.
Debnath's win is not an isolated incident reflecting the shifting political landscape. Rekha Patra, another woman whose political entry was influenced by recent events in Bengal, also secured a victory. Patra, who gained national prominence during the Sandeshkhali protests against alleged atrocities by TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh, won the Hingalganj Assembly seat by 5,421 votes. She polled 1,00,207 votes against TMC's Ananda Sarkar, who received 94,786 votes, marking a successful electoral debut after an earlier loss in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Basirhat.
