Gola, a well-known community dog from SDA Market in Hauz Khas, has been officially crowned Delhi's 'Fattest Dog' following a quirky citywide competition. The contest, which captivated residents across the capital, concluded with Gola securing a decisive victory over Saket's Googoo by a margin of 39,904 votes.
A Citywide Canine Election
What began as a simple social media initiative quickly escalated into a full-fledged campaign, drawing participation from 64 dogs across Delhi. Supporters passionately advocated for their neighborhood favorites through Instagram posts, memes, reels, and appeals for votes, turning the contest into a viral phenomenon.
The voting process for the 'Fattest Dog of Delhi' contest was unique, combining online polls with traditional offline methods. Polling booths were strategically set up in cafes located in areas like Vasant Vihar, Kamla Nagar, and Punjabi Bagh. These booths attracted diverse age groups, with some voters even arriving with campaign materials to support their chosen canine, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a real election.
Gola's Posthumous Victory
Gola, affectionately known by some as Kebab or Rajpal Singh, emerged as one of the most popular contenders early on. Remarkably, Gola remained on the ballot and continued to gain support even after her passing during the competition. Her posthumous participation and eventual victory against Googoo in the final, which garnered approximately 94,000 votes in total, underscored her profound connection with the community.
More Than Just a Contest
Organizers noted that the 'Fattest Dog of Delhi' contest evolved beyond a light-hearted competition, fostering a significant sense of community engagement. Residents rallied around their local dogs, and animal lovers utilized the heightened attention to highlight the lives of Delhi's many community dogs. The campaign's unexpected popularity is also expected to benefit various animal welfare initiatives, including efforts to secure donations for shelters, food, beds, and collars for stray animals.
The contest has now officially concluded with Gola's crowning, leaving behind a legacy of community spirit and renewed focus on animal welfare in the city.
