Bengaluru-born musician and global traveler Benny Prasad recently garnered widespread attention for his extraordinary journey: visiting 257 countries and territories, a feat documented across 16 Indian passports. Prasad's story is not merely one of setting records, but a profoundly personal narrative of overcoming severe illness, rejection, and profound depression.
A Childhood Defined by Illness and Despair
Prasad's early life was marked by significant health struggles. Born with severe asthma, he underwent extensive treatment with high doses of cortisone steroids. According to Prasad, this medication left him with permanent damage to nearly 60 percent of his lungs and contributed to rheumatoid arthritis. These physical challenges were exacerbated by academic difficulties and constant criticism, leading to a deep sense of hopelessness.
“Doctors gave me 6 months to live. I had been thrown out of school and felt I had no future. I even contemplated suicide because I believed there was no purpose to my life,” Prasad shared with The Indian Express.
A Turning Point and a Global Mission
The trajectory of Prasad's life dramatically shifted during a Christian youth camp, where he described a profound spiritual experience. At 19, he picked up a guitar, marking the beginning of his musical journey. In 1998, he made his first international trip to perform in Sri Lanka. Three years later, a deeper calling emerged: to travel to every country in the world, sharing his music and a message of hope.
“It was never about setting records or becoming famous,” Prasad stated. “I traveled because I wanted to experience cultures, share my music and tell my story.”
Achieving a World Record in Global Travel
Prasad's unwavering dedication culminated in a remarkable world travel record in 2010, after a continuous journey spanning 6 years, 6 months, and 22 days. His travels eventually included South Sudan, completing his list of sovereign and dependent nations. Yet, for Prasad, the true value of his journey lies not in the numbers, but in the profound human connections and understanding gained.
“Travel is something people should never compromise on,” he emphasized. “Explore the culture, the food, the people and the reality of a place.”
Navigating Challenges and Choosing India
Despite numerous opportunities to settle in countries like the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, and Singapore, Benny Prasad chose to remain in India. He credits his global travels with deepening his appreciation for India’s incredible diversity, while also expressing hope for improvements in civic discipline and public services.
Traveling on an Indian passport often presented unique logistical and visa-related hurdles, including missed flights and complicated routes. However, Prasad’s perseverance remained unshaken. “When you’re passionate about something, you don’t let obstacles stop you. You simply find another way,” he affirmed.
