Leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) nations have reached a significant agreement to stabilize volatile global oil markets. The plan includes a coordinated release of 100 million barrels of oil over a four-month period, alongside synchronized refinery maintenance schedules among member countries. These actions are designed to counteract escalating oil prices, which are threatening economic stability and imposing financial strain on households and businesses worldwide.
Global Oil Market Stability Efforts
The G7's strategy, outlined in a statement on global energy security, focuses on both immediate and mid-term interventions. A substantial portion of the 100 million barrel release will be frontloaded, particularly targeting diesel supplies. The group will also coordinate refinery maintenance to prevent simultaneous shutdowns that could exacerbate fuel shortages. Furthermore, G7 members will seek to temporarily increase refinery utilization rates where feasible and engage with other nations possessing significant refining capacity to boost global production of refined petroleum products.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has been tasked with monitoring the immediate and full implementation of these commitments, including earlier pledges made in March 2026. The G7 will consult with the IEA in the coming days to assess if additional diesel releases are necessary.
Preventing Export Restrictions and Ensuring Trade Routes
In a bid to maintain market fluidity, the G7 reaffirmed its commitment to refrain from imposing export restrictions on energy and energy products among member countries. The group also called upon other energy-producing nations globally to avoid such bans, which could intensify market tensions and disrupt supply chains.
A critical concern addressed by the G7 was the disruption to energy trade through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping lane. The leaders condemned continued attacks against regional neighbors and disruptions to international trade, energy security, and the global economy. They called for the immediate and full restoration of navigation rights and principles in the Strait of Hormuz and pledged to step up collective efforts toward this objective, commending the United States for its efforts in ensuring free flow of commerce through the waterway.
Continued Sanctions on Russia
The G7 also reiterated its resolve to maintain sanctions against Russia. This commitment is coupled with ongoing collaboration with the IEA and other global partners to prevent further negative spillovers into fuel, gas, and other commodity markets. The group emphasized that energy prices remain a top priority for its citizens and pledged to continue monitoring developments and adjust measures as necessary to ensure long-term resilience in global energy markets.
