A harrowing mid-air incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv recently escalated into a confrontation between heroic passengers and cabin crew, according to passenger accounts. After an Omani co-pilot allegedly stabbed the Indian captain and sent the aircraft into a rapid descent, several Israeli passengers intervened to subdue the assailant.
The dramatic events unfolded when the co-pilot attacked the captain, causing the plane to plunge nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. The wounded captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers, including Zvika Manes and Daniel Schlichter, along with an off-duty crew member, to rush in. They successfully overpowered the co-pilot, identified as al-Hammami, and secured him using zip ties and headphone cables.
Mid-Air Standoff Over Subdued Attacker
However, the crisis took an unexpected turn when, according to passengers, cabin crew members approached them and demanded the release of the bound co-pilot. Daniel Schlichter recounted, "They were saying to free the terrorist. We got instantly suspicious of them." Passengers firmly refused, citing concerns that other crew members might be involved in the plot. Zvika Manes noted the crew's insistence, stating, "They said, 'You are not God, you are not going to kill him.'" Passengers clarified their sole intent was to secure the aircraft, not to harm the attacker, even placing an oxygen mask on him to ensure his survival for questioning.
Emergency Landing and Ongoing Investigation
Following the subduing of the co-pilot, two off-duty pilots aboard the flight were able to take control and execute an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. More than 10 hours later, the 174 people on board were flown to Tel Aviv on a replacement Flydubai aircraft, with many describing their survival as a "miracle."
The United Arab Emirates has initiated an investigation into the incident, including potential links to terrorism. Saudi authorities provided initial medical treatment to both pilots before the suspect was transferred to the UAE for further examination into the motive behind the violence.
