Delhi Police has announced a temporary suspension of mobile internet services across a 4-kilometre radius surrounding the Janpath–Kartavya Path crossing. The 24-hour block, which began at 10 PM on October 9 and will conclude at 10 PM on October 10, is a precautionary measure ahead of a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar.
Reason for the Internet Suspension
The suspension aims to maintain law and order during a significant demonstration organised by CJP supporters, activists, opposition parties, and lawmakers. Protestors are expected to gather at Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration focuses on alleged irregularities identified during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a recent voter re-verification exercise.
According to a notification issued by Manishi Chandra, Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police (Special Cell), the restriction will encompass all mobile internet technologies. The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved this temporary measure, and major telecom operators, including Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio, and MTNL, have been directed to implement the order.
Legal Basis and Affected Area
The internet shutdown has been imposed under the provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and the Telecommunications Services (Temporary Suspension) Rules, 2024. The affected zone specifically covers a 4-kilometre radius from the Janpath–Kartavya Path intersection, a key area in central Delhi.
Residents, commuters, and visitors within this designated area may experience disruptions to their mobile data services throughout the specified 24-hour period. While mobile internet is suspended, the notification does not explicitly state that fixed-line broadband or voice calling services will be affected. Those planning to travel through central Delhi on October 10 are advised to anticipate potential connectivity issues and monitor official police advisories for any further updates.
