Delhi-NCR Thunderstorms Bring Significant Relief from Intense Heatwave

· · 2 min read

Delhi-NCR experienced significant relief from a prolonged heatwave on Thursday as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall swept across the region. This welcome weather shift, driven by a fresh Western Disturbance, is expected to continue until June 6.

NEW DELHI – The Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) and several parts of north India received much-needed respite from an intense heatwave on Thursday as heavy thunderstorms and rain lashed the areas. The sudden change in weather brought down soaring temperatures, which had previously hovered between 39 and 42 degrees Celsius.

Western Disturbance Brings Cooler Temperatures

The dramatic weather shift is attributed to a fresh Western Disturbance, a low-pressure system originating over the Mediterranean. This system moves eastward, carrying moisture, and upon reaching the Himalayas, it interacts with the hot air over northwest India. This interaction creates ideal conditions for thunderstorms, rain, and strong winds.

The impact was widespread, with rain reported across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, north Rajasthan, and northwest Uttar Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh also witnessed hailstorms, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures in the hilly state.

Outlook for Coming Days

Weather experts predict that these conditions, including more rain and thunderstorms, will persist across the affected regions until June 6. The weather activity is anticipated to intensify during the evening and night hours. Some of the most impacted areas could see between 20 mm and 40 mm of rainfall during this period.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of strong winds, potentially reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph, accompanying the thunderstorms. Residents are advised to remain indoors during lightning events and to secure any loose items kept on balconies or rooftops.

This spell of rain is expected to offer temporary relief from the heat and is seen as a precursor to the gradual onset of the monsoon season in the region.
