After a short period of cooler weather, Delhi is bracing for a significant increase in temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that while some thunder activity is expected on May 7, heatwave conditions are set to return rapidly by May 9-10.
Brief Reprieve on May 7
Residents of Delhi and its National Capital Region (NCR) cities, including Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, can anticipate a final spell of relief on May 7. Cloud formation and scattered thunderstorms are forecast for the afternoon or evening across various districts. Maximum temperatures for Thursday are expected to hover between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius, with minimums ranging from 23 to 24 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures to Soar by May 9-10
The weather outlook shifts dramatically from May 8 onwards. The IMD predicts mainly clear skies for Delhi-NCR between May 8 and May 12, with a minimal chance of rainfall. Temperatures are projected to climb sharply, potentially reaching 40 degrees Celsius on May 9 and 10. This rise will likely usher in heatwave-like conditions across the capital.
According to the IMD, maximum temperatures could increase by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius over the next five days. While a fresh western disturbance is expected to affect the western Himalayan region starting May 10, its influence on Delhi's weather is not anticipated before the middle of next week. Until then, dry and increasingly hot conditions will dominate the region.
IMD Advises Caution
In light of the impending heat, the IMD has urged vulnerable groups, including children, senior citizens, and individuals sensitive to heat, to take precautions. The department advises avoiding direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours and maintaining adequate hydration throughout the week.
