A recent student protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), experienced an unexpected surge of support from well-wishers globally, manifesting as a massive influx of food deliveries. What began as a gesture of solidarity quickly escalated into a logistical challenge, prompting organizers to appeal for a pause in donations.
Overwhelming Support from Afar
On a recent Tuesday, the intersection of Tolstoy Marg and Sansad Marg became a bustling hub for food delivery riders. Hundreds of orders, originating from across India and even countries like the United States, poured in for the students and protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar. Riders reported making numerous trips, with some individual orders comprising dozens of pizzas, burgers, momos, or hundreds of samosas.
One delivery agent recounted making 20 rounds to the site in a single day, noting that four of those orders came from the U.S. Another described a massive order for 80 pizzas, which required even his manager to assist with delivery due to the sheer volume. Donors often specified Jantar Mantar as the destination and requested riders to hand the food directly to protesters, sometimes asking for photo or video proof of delivery.
Motivations Behind the Generosity
The outpouring of support stemmed from various motivations. One donor, a nursing student from Bangalore originally from Bihar, explained his decision to order pizzas for the protesters. He shared his own experience with a leaked NEET question paper in the past, expressing solidarity with the students protesting for their rights. “I can’t come there now, but I wanted to show support to the students protesting, and that is why I ordered pizzas,” he stated.
Delivery personnel and volunteers also found themselves deeply involved. One volunteer, who made 18 trips delivering everything from 10 cups of chai to 34 burgers and 200 samosas, felt a personal connection to the cause. Despite earning little for some long trips, he expressed happiness in distributing food to the students, acknowledging, “I also have two children, and these people are protesting for the right cause.”
Organizers Plead for a Pause
By late evening, the volume of donations became unmanageable. Volunteers on-site struggled to distribute the vast quantities of food, with some items remaining unclaimed. The CJP, via its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), issued a plea to sympathizers to halt further deliveries.
“India is such a beautiful country with such beautiful people — thanks for sending food for protesters. We are so overwhelmed. BUT for today, we have received more than enough food — please don’t send any more!”
This unprecedented display of solidarity, while heartwarming, highlighted the logistical challenges that can arise when public support reaches overwhelming levels, turning a gesture of goodwill into a complex distribution puzzle.
