Heavy monsoon rains have unleashed a deadly torrent across Gujarat, resulting in at least four fatalities and prompting urgent public safety measures. Authorities have closed popular lakefront gardens in Ahmedabad and issued high-level weather alerts as rescue operations intensify across the state.
Tragedy Strikes Navsari and Anand
In Navsari district's Gandevi, three farm laborers tragically died from electrocution when the tempo truck they were traveling in came into contact with a live high-tension wire. The victims, identified as Kalpesh Halpati (30), Nitin Halpati (32), and Jigar Halpati (21), were en route to a farm when the accident occurred, with poor visibility cited as a contributing factor. Two other individuals sustained critical injuries and are receiving hospital care.
Meanwhile, in Anand district's Borsad taluka, an 11-year-old girl was swept away and killed in a canal. Her siblings were rescued from the dangerous waters.
Ahmedabad Implements Precautionary Closures
As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued heavy rainfall, Ahmedabad authorities have acted swiftly. Entry to all lakefront gardens in the city has been banned until August 2. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) also postponed Friday's Gauri and Jaya-Parvati fast celebrations along the Sabarmati Riverfront and Kankaria lakefront as a safety measure. Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.
State Mobilizes for Extensive Rescue and Evacuation
With red alerts issued for five districts and orange alerts for eleven others, Gujarat's administration has ramped up its response. By Friday evening, the state had received 61.5% of its seasonal rainfall, necessitating extensive evacuation efforts. Over 16,500 people have been moved to safer locations, and 41 individuals were rescued. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel personally reviewed the situation at the State Emergency Operations Centre.
To bolster rescue capabilities, two Army columns have been deployed to Ahmedabad, Navsari, and Surat, while Air Force helicopters are on standby at Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Vadodara, and Pune. State Relief Commissioner Gaurang Makwana confirmed the deployment of 33 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and 17 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams. In Navsari, 11 panchayat roads in the hard-hit Gandevi taluka were closed, and residents from several villages were relocated to shelter homes, prioritizing vulnerable citizens.
Ahmedabad Fire and Rescue on High Alert
Ahmedabad's emergency services are operating at peak readiness. All 19 fire stations are fully staffed with 678 fire and rescue personnel on 24-hour standby, with all officer and employee holidays cancelled. Eight rescue boats, each with a trained seven-member crew, are also prepared for immediate deployment, working in conjunction with AMC staff monitoring weather conditions from the main monsoon control room.
