New Delhi witnessed a significant protest on Monday as thousands of members from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) initiated their 'Chalo Sansad' (March to Parliament) demonstration. The large-scale march towards the Indian Parliament led to heightened security and confrontations with law enforcement.
Amidst the escalating situation, the central government has reportedly agreed to engage in discussions with the protesting party. CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das confirmed that he, along with fellow party spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka, was en route to meet JP Nadda, a prominent government representative, for talks.
Clashes Erupt Near Parliament Street
Earlier in the day, tensions flared near Parliament Street as protesters allegedly attempted to breach security barricades. Police forces resorted to a baton-charge to disperse the crowd, leading to a scuffle. Sources indicated that this occurred around 11:25 AM, resulting in minor injuries to both protesters and police personnel. Approximately 10-15 individuals were reportedly detained during the incident.
Despite these reports, New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma stated that no Delhi Police personnel had used force against the protesters. A heavy deployment of uniformed and plainclothes officers was maintained across the high-security zone to ensure law and order.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk Seeks to Join March
Adding another dimension to the protest, activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was reportedly at Safdarjung Hospital, requested temporary discharge to join the 'Sansad Chalo' march. In a handwritten letter to the medical superintendent, Wangchuk asserted that his health parameters were normal and he felt well enough to participate in the demonstration.
The CJP's demands, while not fully detailed, are understood to be centered around issues concerning the youth, who gathered in large numbers to support the march. The outcome of the scheduled meeting between CJP representatives and JP Nadda is keenly awaited as the protest continues to unfold in the capital.
