China has significantly ramped up its assistance to Nepal following a devastating cross-border glacier collapse that triggered severe mudslides. Beijing confirmed it has shared crucial satellite, hydrological, and early-warning data with Kathmandu to aid in disaster response efforts.
Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, announced on Sunday that two specialized teams of tunnel rescue experts have been dispatched to Nepal. This comes as part of a comprehensive aid package, which also includes emergency cash and humanitarian supplies, with relief materials expected to arrive in Kathmandu shortly.
China Pledges Extensive Support Amid Unprecedented Disaster
The decision to provide extensive support was discussed during a phone call between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Nepali Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal. Wang Yi emphasized that China is actively implementing its assistance package, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
"Wang Yi stated that China is implementing a package of assistance for Nepal, including emergency cash and humanitarian aid, with relief supplies set to arrive in Kathmandu soon. Two teams of Chinese tunnel rescue experts have been dispatched, and China has shared satellite, hydrological, and early-warning data," Ambassador Xu Feihong relayed.
China's foreign ministry had earlier reported that the sudden glacier collapse in the border region caused heavy casualties and left many people missing in both China and Nepal. Foreign Minister Wang Yi described it as the most severe cross-border disaster between the two nations in recent years, highlighting the unprecedented complexity and difficulty of the relief work.
Shared Future: China and Nepal United in Crisis
In his conversation with Minister Khanal, Wang Yi reiterated the strong bond between the two countries. "China and Nepal are a community connected by mountains and rivers and sharing a common future," he stated, as quoted by Ambassador Xu.
He added that in the face of this serious cross-border disaster, both nations would "stand together, join hands to overcome difficulties, and interpret their traditional friendship with concrete actions." China is also engaged in its own emergency rescue and self-recovery efforts while actively supporting Nepal's disaster response initiatives.
