A routine journey aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 transformed into a desperate fight for survival when an Omani co-pilot launched a violent attack on Captain Smit Machchhar at 34,000 feet. The incident, which jeopardized the lives of 174 people on board, saw Machchhar display extraordinary courage under extreme pressure.
Mid-Air Assault Unfolds
Recounting the harrowing events to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Captain Machchhar explained that the co-pilot had stood up to pray, a common practice among local pilots. Out of respect, Machchhar kept his gaze fixed forward. Just minutes later, a heavy blow struck the back of his head.
“It was a normal flight, and the co-pilot wanted to pray, which a lot of locals do. While he was praying, out of respect, I just looked at the front and not at the back. And suddenly, after about four or five minutes, there was a big blow to the back of my head,” Machchhar stated.
Initially disoriented, the captain feared severe structural damage to the aircraft. However, as the blows continued, he quickly realized the true nature of the threat: it was his co-pilot.
A Desperate Struggle for Control
Machchhar attempted to subdue his assailant, but the brutal assault blurred his vision. Despite his injuries, he managed to unlock the cockpit door early in the struggle, only for the attacker to shut it again. The aircraft began a terrifying steep plunge, sending panic through the passenger cabin.
Severely injured, Machchhar knew he had one last chance to act. “I had that one last fight left in me. Call it personal or call it for people, but let’s say I did it. If I don’t do it, I’m going to die,” he recalled. With a surge of adrenaline, he pushed against his attacker, reached for the door knob, and twisted it open.
Crew members, who had been attempting to enter using an access code from outside—only to be blocked by the co-pilot—were waiting. They quickly intervened, taking control of the situation and securing the cockpit.
Praise and Recovery
Following the ordeal, Captain Machchhar was admitted to an Abu Dhabi hospital for recovery. His incredible composure and bravery were quickly recognized. UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum visited Machchhar, commending his actions.
In a post on X, Sheikh Hamdan praised the captain for embodying “the highest degrees of courage, responsibility, and care for human life,” adding, “We are proud that he is part of our team… part of the story of our nation.”
The Indian Embassy in the UAE confirmed Machchhar's steady recovery, maintaining regular contact with his family. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with the captain, praising his quick thinking, while Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced the Visisht Gujarat Garima Award to honor his heroism.
