Assam's flood situation has shown a slight improvement, with the total number of affected individuals decreasing to 1.12 lakh (112,000) on Tuesday. This marks a reduction from Monday's figure of 1.26 lakh (126,000) across the same seven districts, according to the latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Despite this marginal relief, the overall crisis continues as 441 villages remain submerged across 25 revenue circles. The season's death toll from the floods remains at 101, with no new fatalities reported in the last 24 hours.
Districts Grappling with Floodwaters
Seven districts continue to be severely impacted by the deluge:
- Golaghat: Remains the worst-hit, with 65,295 people still struggling with floodwaters.
- Sivasagar: Reports 18,494 affected individuals.
- Nagaon: Accounts for 16,321 affected people.
- Other affected districts include Hojai, Jorhat, Darrang, and Lakhimpur.
Adding to the concern, the Dhansiri (S) River at Numaligarh and the Kushiyara River in Sribhumi are still flowing above their danger levels, indicating a fragile situation despite the overall decline in affected population.
Relief and Healthcare Operations Underway
Authorities are actively engaged in relief operations:
- A total of 47 relief camps are operational, providing shelter to 7,982 displaced individuals.
- Another 45 relief distribution centres are assisting affected communities across the state.
Assam's Health Minister, Ashok Singhal, confirmed the government's focus on public health in flood-affected regions. Special emphasis has been placed on ensuring access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and continuous healthcare services. Medical teams have been deployed, setting up 3,103 camps that have provided free treatment and medicine to over 200,000 people.
Widespread Damage Reported
Beyond the human impact, the floods have caused significant damage to agriculture and infrastructure:
- Approximately 10,879 hectares of cropland remain submerged.
- More than 29,000 animals have been affected by the floodwaters.
- Reports of damage to houses, cattle sheds, and crucial road networks continue to emerge from the impacted districts.
