· · 2 min read

Vote counting for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections is underway across 40 centers for all 126 constituencies. Early trends show the NDA leading for a potential third term, while prominent opposition leaders, including Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, are trailing or have lost.

Counting of votes for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections commenced on Monday, May 4, 2026, across 40 dedicated centers spanning the state's 35 districts. Early indications from the Election Commission of India suggest a strong performance by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), positioning the ruling coalition for a potential third consecutive term in power.

The electoral battle for all 126 Assembly constituencies has seen significant developments, with several key opposition figures facing setbacks. Among the most notable upsets, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, a three-time Lok Sabha MP and the projected chief ministerial face of the Congress-led six-party alliance, lost his Jorhat seat. Gogoi was defeated by BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by a substantial margin of 23,182 votes.

Key Opposition Leaders Trailing

Beyond Gogoi's defeat, other prominent opposition leaders are also reportedly trailing in their respective constituencies. This includes Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Akhil Gogoi, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Jagadish Bhuyan, and Rajen Gohain, signaling a challenging day for the Opposition alliance.

The ruling NDA has already registered victories in Dhemaji and Sissibargaon, further solidifying its lead as the counting process continues. While most districts host a single counting center, strategic locations such as Nagaon have three centers, and Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat each have two centers to facilitate an efficient tabulation of votes.

The Battle for Assam's Future

The final results will determine whether the NDA successfully secures another mandate or if the Congress-led opposition manages to mount a significant comeback. With early trends favoring the incumbent alliance, the political landscape of Assam appears poised for continuity.
