Artificial Light at Night Harms Human Health and Wildlife Globally

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) is increasingly recognized as an environmental problem. It disrupts human circadian rhythms, suppresses melatonin, and profoundly alters animal behavior, plant growth, and entire ecosystems worldwide.

For most of history, night meant darkness. Today, however, an ever-expanding glow of artificial light from cities, streetlights, and buildings is rapidly diminishing natural darkness. This phenomenon, known as Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) or light pollution, is now being treated by scientists as a significant environmental concern, not merely an inconvenience for astronomers.

Unlike air or water pollution, light doesn't leave a physical residue, yet its presence can drastically alter the natural cycles of light and darkness that organisms have evolved around for millions of years.

The Silent Impact on Human Health

One of the most pressing concerns for humans is the disruption of the body's circadian rhythm—our internal clock that regulates sleep, hormone production, and various biological processes. Exposure to artificial light after sunset can suppress melatonin, the crucial hormone associated with sleep, thereby interfering with normal circadian timing.

Reviews of existing research consistently link artificial night-time light with a range of potential health effects, though the precise mechanisms and strength of these associations remain subjects of ongoing investigation. The color of light also plays a role; blue-rich light is particularly effective at impacting biological systems that respond to darkness, making the widespread adoption of bright white LEDs a critical consideration.

Wildlife Navigates a Brighter Night

For animals, the consequences of ALAN can be immediate and severe. Insects are often drawn uncontrollably towards artificial lights, disrupting their feeding, reproduction, and movement patterns. Birds may alter their activity and navigation, impacting migration routes and nesting behaviors. Nocturnal mammals, in turn, might avoid illuminated areas altogether, leading to changes in predator-prey relationships and fragmenting habitats that would otherwise remain connected.

Recent research continues to build this picture. A 2026 meta-analysis, for example, examined data from 36 studies across 30 bird species and found that artificial light at night consistently affects avian physiology and behavior, with varying magnitudes and directions across different species. The impact also extends to plants, which respond to changes in light exposure, potentially altering their growth, flowering cycles, and other essential biological processes.

Ecosystems Under Threat

The broader concern arises when these individual disruptions interact within an ecosystem. Artificial night-time light can fundamentally change when organisms feed, reproduce, migrate, or become active. These shifts can profoundly affect interactions between species, ultimately altering the entire structure and functioning of ecosystems. Research published in Nature Climate Change has even indicated that artificial light can influence ecosystem metabolism, highlighting its far-reaching effects beyond individual organisms.

Addressing the Growing Glow

The problem of light pollution is escalating in tandem with global urbanization, and newer research continues to identify species and ecosystems whose responses to ALAN are still poorly understood. The objective is not to eliminate artificial lighting entirely, as it remains essential for transport, public safety, and various workplaces. Instead, the challenge lies in implementing smarter, more responsible lighting solutions: ensuring the right amount of light is used, in the right place, for the right amount of time.
