Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee was reportedly roughed up by a hostile crowd in Sonarpur, West Bengal, on May 30, 2026. The incident occurred while Banerjee was visiting families affected by recent post-poll violence in the area.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene where a crowd cornered Banerjee, shouting "Chor Chor" (thief) slogans. The parliamentarian was subjected to a barrage of projectiles, including stones, shoes, and eggs, resulting in his shirt being torn. Police personnel struggled to escort him to safety, and he was reportedly forced to wear a police helmet for protection.
Banerjee, visibly distressed, attributed the assault to a pre-planned conspiracy and a significant breakdown in local law enforcement. Speaking to reporters amidst the commotion, he stated, "Look what they have done to me. This was pre-planned. There is no police in the area. They want to kill me. I will not leave this place till the local police send their force and offer protection to the victims' families."
The incident comes barely a month after the TMC faced a significant defeat in the Assembly Elections 2026, where the BJP secured a massive 207-seat win. The atmosphere in West Bengal has remained tense following reports of post-poll violence.
Local police have since launched an investigation into the security breach and are working to identify the individuals involved in the attack on the TMC MP. The incident highlights the volatile political climate in the region.
