GURUGRAM, India – A large sinkhole, approximately 10 feet by 10 feet, abruptly opened on a service road near Gurugram’s bustling IFFCO Chowk on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred a day after heavy monsoon rains battered the city, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic chaos.
Road Collapse Disrupts Traffic
The cave-in, located along the Delhi–Jaipur side of the service road near the Westin Hotel, caused immediate disruption to traffic flow at one of Gurugram’s busiest intersections. Local authorities quickly responded to cordon off the affected area and manage the ensuing congestion.
Sewer Line Damage Suspected Cause
Preliminary investigations suggest that a 1,000-mm master sewer line, managed by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), runs beneath or alongside the compromised section of the road. Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and GMDA suspect that a leakage or failure in this underground line led to significant soil erosion, creating a void that ultimately caused the road surface to collapse.
“Preliminary findings indicate that a GMDA master sewer line is running beneath/along the affected location, and possible leakage or failure of the sewer line may have caused soil erosion and subsequent collapse of the road crust,” an NHAI official stated.
Emergency Response and Repair Plans
Following the incident, Gurgaon Traffic Police deployed reflective barricades and signage to secure the damaged stretch and prevent accidents. Teams from NHAI and GMDA arrived on site to assess the damage and initiate safety and stabilization measures.
GMDA spokesperson Neha Sharma confirmed that the area has been barricaded and instructions have been issued for the urgent repair of the master sewer line. “The road repair work will be taken up after the master sewer line is repaired,” Sharma added. Bhim Arya, a GMDA executive engineer, indicated that repairs to the sewer line are scheduled to commence on Wednesday morning, with efforts focused on completing the work as quickly as possible.
Concerns Over City Infrastructure
The NHAI has issued a warning that if the underlying issue is not promptly addressed, the subsidence could pose a risk to nearby structures. The road will remain closed until the sewer line is fully repaired and the ground is declared stable.
This latest incident has reignited concerns about Gurugram’s civic infrastructure and drainage systems, particularly in the wake of severe rainfall that frequently overwhelms parts of the city, leading to waterlogging and traffic gridlock.
