Xpeng, the prominent Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has achieved a significant milestone by unveiling the world's first automated production line dedicated to assembling advanced general-purpose humanoid robots. This innovative factory utilizes robots to autonomously mass-produce other robots, marking a new era in manufacturing.
A video shared by chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng showcased an IRON humanoid robot being assembled on this automated line before walking off independently. Xiaopeng emphasized that over 80 percent of the line's core processes are automated, a feat accomplished by tackling uncharted territory from scratch.
Introducing the IRON Humanoid Robot
The IRON robot, first introduced at Xpeng's AI Day last November, is designed with impressive capabilities. It features 76 degrees of freedom across its body and 21 in each hand, utilizing a fully enclosed flexible lattice structure that balances human-like form with safety considerations.
Powering the IRON robot are three in-house Turing AI chips, delivering up to 2,250 TOPS of effective computing power. This robust processing capacity allows its Physical AI foundation model to run directly on the robot, enabling it to perform complex tasks without requiring remote operation.
Future Plans for Mass Production and Deployment
Xpeng plans for the IRON robots to enter mass production by the end of the year, with initial rollouts scheduled for its own stores and campuses. The official launch and deliveries to both Chinese and overseas markets are projected for 2027.
He Xiaopeng expressed his aspiration for the IRON robot to develop a "true generalization ability," enabling it to handle dangerous, repetitive, or undesirable tasks. He also envisions a future where robots could become companions, friends, or even part of families, ultimately improving human life.
