WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform owned by Meta, is rolling out a new 'Incognito Chat' mode for its Meta AI chatbot. This feature aims to provide users with a truly private space for conversations, especially when discussing sensitive or personal information.
What is Incognito Chat Mode?
The Incognito Chat mode is designed to ensure that interactions with Meta AI remain confidential. Users can engage in discussions involving highly sensitive topics such as financial details, health information, personal issues, or confidential work data without concern for their privacy. WhatsApp emphasizes that these conversations are temporary and will automatically disappear by default, ensuring they are not permanently stored.
How Meta's Private Processing Technology Works
At the heart of the Incognito Chat mode is Meta's "Private Processing technology." This innovative system utilizes Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), which process conversations within a protected cloud environment. This setup makes it highly restrictive for anyone, including Meta itself, to access or view the content of these private chats. WhatsApp explicitly states, "Incognito Chat with Meta AI is truly private — no one can read your conversation, not even us."
Availability and Future Enhancements
The Incognito Chat feature for Meta AI is being rolled out to users across WhatsApp and the dedicated Meta AI app over the coming months. In addition to this, WhatsApp also plans to introduce a "Side Chat" feature. This upcoming enhancement will allow users to privately consult Meta AI for assistance during an ongoing chat conversation. The AI will intelligently understand the context of the main discussion and provide help without interrupting or altering the primary chat. The Side Chat feature will also leverage the same Private Processing technology for enhanced privacy.
