WhatsApp Launches Bill Payments in India: Pay Utilities, FASTag, & More

· · 2 min read

WhatsApp has rolled out a new Bill Payments feature in India, allowing users to manage and pay over 22,000 household and utility bills directly within the app. The service, powered by Bharat Connect (BBPS), supports UPI, debit, and credit card payments.

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, has expanded its services in India with the introduction of a dedicated Bill Payments feature. Launched on September 2, 2026, this new functionality allows users to conveniently find, manage, and settle various household and utility bills without ever leaving the application.

Seamless Bill Management with Bharat Connect

The new Bill Payments feature is integrated with the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, granting users access to an extensive network of 22,722 billers across 30 diverse categories. This broad coverage includes essential services such as electricity, gas, and water, alongside other payments like FASTag recharges, insurance premiums, credit card bills, and loan repayments.

Users can access the Bill Payments section by tapping the '₹' icon located on WhatsApp's home screen. The platform intelligently pre-fetches bill details, and for added convenience, billers previously paid through WhatsApp will appear on the Payments Home for quick, one-tap access. The feature also allows for managing bills for personal accounts, office, and family under a single provider.

Flexible Payment Options and Gradual Rollout

To facilitate a seamless payment experience, WhatsApp supports multiple payment methods. Users can choose to pay their bills using UPI, debit cards, or credit cards, offering flexibility based on their preference. The process is straightforward: select a bill category and biller, add account details, and WhatsApp will retrieve the bill amount before the user confirms the payment mode.

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head for Meta India, emphasized that the goal is to make bill payments as effortless as sending a message, thereby extending the convenience of digital payments to a wider audience across the country. This new addition complements WhatsApp's existing range of services in India, which include phone recharges, metro-ticket bookings, and access to citizen services via government chatbots.

The Bill Payments feature is being rolled out progressively across India and is expected to become available to all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
