WhatsApp is introducing a new search shortcut for its iOS application, making it significantly easier for users to locate specific messages within their chats and channels. This update streamlines the search process, eliminating the need to navigate through multiple menus.
Simplified Message Search on iOS
Previously, searching for a message inside an individual or group chat required users to open the chat's information screen before accessing the search function. The new shortcut bypasses these extra steps, integrating the search option directly into the chat interface.
The search button appears at the top of the chat screen, just beneath the navigation bar, becoming visible as a user scrolls up through a conversation. A single tap on this new icon activates search mode, enabling immediate keyword entry and message discovery within the current chat.
Expanding Search to Channels
This convenient search shortcut isn't limited to personal and group conversations. WhatsApp is also extending the feature to channels, where it functions in the same manner. Channel subscribers can now easily search through past updates and content without needing to open the channel's information page, enhancing content discoverability.
Gradual Rollout and Availability
The new search shortcut is being gradually rolled out to iOS users. Reports indicate that it is currently reaching some users via WhatsApp Messenger for iOS version 26.36.74, available on the App Store. While the feature was initially spotted in beta during August 2026, with the button positioned at the bottom, WhatsApp later moved it to the top of the screen for the wider release, ensuring it appears contextually when most useful and avoids conflicts with other UI elements.
As the rollout is gradual, not all users may see the shortcut immediately, but it is expected to become more widely available in the coming weeks.
