Tencent Commits ₹10 Crore to India's AVGC Sector, Partners with SEPC & GDAI

Chinese tech giant Tencent has pledged ₹10 crore (approximately $1.2 million USD) to boost India's Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector. This initiative includes a three-year partnership with the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and the Game Developers Association of India (GDAI) to foster talent and industry growth.

Tencent, the prominent Chinese technology firm, has announced a significant multi-year investment in India's burgeoning Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) ecosystem. The company plans to inject ₹10 crore in initial resources and programs aimed at talent development, startup support, and overall industry capacity building.

Strategic Partnerships for India's Creative Economy

As part of this broader effort to support India’s growing “Orange Economy,” Tencent has signed separate three-year Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with two key organizations: the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and the Game Developers Association of India (GDAI).

Danny Marti, Head of Public Policy and Global Affairs at Tencent, emphasized the company’s commitment. “Our goal goes beyond investing in programs. We want to work with local partners to build practical pathways for talent, creators, and studios,” Marti stated. “By combining India’s creative strengths with Tencent’s expertise, we hope to support a more connected and globally competitive AVGC ecosystem.”

Collaboration with SEPC

Under its partnership with SEPC, Tencent will focus on national capacity building initiatives, facilitating crucial industry dialogues, and assisting Indian AVGC companies in accessing international value chains. Dr. Abhay Sinha, Director General of SEPC, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, highlighted the sector's importance. “The AVGC sector is an important driver of India’s services exports and creative competitiveness,” said Dr. Sinha. “Our future potential collaborations with Tencent will aim to help strengthen industry capabilities and offer more opportunities for Indian companies and professionals in the international market.”

Engagement with GDAI for Gaming Talent

A separate three-year agreement with GDAI is specifically designed to foster grassroots developer engagement and cultivate gaming talent. Key initiatives include a National Game Jam, projected to involve over 10,000 students annually, along with train-the-trainer programs for educators and active participation in the Indian Game Developers Conference (IGDC).

Shruti Verma, CEO of GDAI, expressed optimism about the partnership. “India is at a defining moment in its gaming journey, with the opportunity to emerge as a global hub for game development and interactive entertainment,” Verma commented. “Through this partnership with Tencent, we aim to strengthen the talent pipeline through grassroots skilling, mentorship, and deeper developer engagement.”

India's Rapidly Expanding Gaming Market

This strategic move by Tencent aligns with the rapid expansion of India’s gaming market. Data cited by Tencent from Niko Partners indicates that India is anticipated to become the fastest-growing gaming market across Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa (MENA) region. Projections suggest player spending could reach $1.5 billion by 2028, with the country expected to host 724 million gamers by 2029.
