Teen Innovator Builds AI Trash Robot 'TRASHbot' for Smarter Waste Management

Class 12 student Mahi Malhani developed TRASHbot, an AI-powered robot that identifies, collects, and sorts waste with over 90% accuracy. The innovation is currently being tested in homes, schools, and residential societies.

NEW DELHI – Inspired by a school trip, a high school student has engineered an innovative AI-powered robot designed to tackle India's significant waste management challenges. Mahi Malhani, a Class 12 student from Amity International School, Mayur Vihar, developed “TRASHbot,” a device capable of autonomously identifying, collecting, and segregating waste.

The Inspiration Behind TRASHbot

The concept for TRASHbot emerged in 2023 during Malhani's visit to Delhi's Sundar Nursery. She observed widespread litter, including plastic wrappers and food waste, despite the presence of dustbins. This observation highlighted a common societal issue: people often discard waste indiscriminately, even when proper disposal options are readily available.

“I noticed litter everywhere, even near dustbins,” Malhani told The Better India. “People often take the easy route and throw waste wherever they can. I wanted to bridge that gap with technology that helps, rather than just tells people to clean up.”

How TRASHbot Works

After months of research into robotics, artificial intelligence, and waste management, Malhani created a working prototype. TRASHbot utilizes a Raspberry Pi-powered camera system integrated with the YOLOv3 object detection model. This allows the robot to recognize various types of waste and direct them into appropriate compartments for biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials.

Unlike traditional static bins, TRASHbot actively engages with its environment and users. It features autonomous movement capabilities via sensors and can also be controlled remotely via Bluetooth for demonstrations. A companion mobile application further gamifies responsible waste disposal, encouraging better habits among users. The robot's lightweight, modular design ensures easy component replacement, enhancing its practicality for daily use.

Tackling India's Waste Challenge

India generates over 1.7 lakh tonnes of solid waste daily, with a substantial portion remaining untreated, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board. Malhani's project aims to make waste segregation effortless and accessible by merging artificial intelligence with environmental responsibility.

TRASHbot represents a significant step towards smarter waste management systems, aligning with global efforts to leverage AI for improved sorting accuracy and reduced landfill waste. The innovation is currently undergoing testing in various settings, including homes, schools, and residential societies, demonstrating its potential to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
