Samsung Electronics is undertaking a significant restructuring of its US operations, including a reduction in its workforce as it moves its headquarters from New Jersey to Texas. The move primarily impacts Samsung Electronics America (SEA), the division responsible for consumer electronics in the U.S.
Hundreds of Positions Affected by Relocation
According to reports citing internal documents and sources, 739 positions at the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, office have been affected. Additionally, approximately 100 employees were laid off at Samsung Electronics America's office in Plano, Texas. While the exact total number of layoffs remains unconfirmed by Samsung, more than 30 employees have shared their departure from the company on LinkedIn in recent weeks. Affected staff include senior-level employees in sales and marketing across various US locations.
The company confirmed to employees on June 30 about an “enterprise-wide reduction-in-force” that would have a “significant number of impacts.”
Strategic Shift and Business Challenges
The workforce reductions are primarily attributed to Samsung's decision to relocate its US headquarters. This move is particularly notable as the company had only recently opened its Englewood Cliffs office in September 2025, with around 1,200 SEA employees expected to work there.
Beyond the relocation, the layoffs also reflect challenges within Samsung’s consumer electronics division, which includes smartphones, televisions, and home appliances. The company is reportedly facing increased pressure from rising chip costs, which have impacted profitability in this segment. Samsung's semiconductor (chip) business, however, remains unaffected by these changes.
Some impacted employees have been offered relocation opportunities to the new Texas headquarters, indicating a strategic consolidation of operations.
