OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has commissioned a highly exclusive series of luxury watches, blending the precision of Swiss craftsmanship with the ambitious vision of artificial general intelligence (AGI). This move signals a growing trend among leading AI firms to extend their brand identity beyond software into the realm of high-end lifestyle products.
Vanguart Creates Seven Unique OpenAI Timepieces
According to reports, Altman ordered seven custom watches from the esteemed Swiss luxury watchmaker Vanguart. These ultra-limited timepieces are based on Vanguart’s 'Orb' model, which typically starts at approximately $180,000 for a standard titanium version. The rarity is compounded by Vanguart having produced fewer than 200 watches in its history, with nearly a third of its 33 employees dedicated to this unique OpenAI project.
The watches feature distinct OpenAI branding and subtle nods to the company's technological philosophy. Engraved around the rotor is the phrase “COMPUTE IS DESTINY,” while the crown subtly incorporates a 'scaling' motif. Perhaps most notably, the case back carries a Python-inspired inscription: if AGI.aligned: deploy(), a direct reference to OpenAI’s core mission of achieving aligned AGI. Vanguart chairman and co-founder Mehmet Koruturk stated that the design reflects a commitment to using AI for peaceful purposes.
Beyond Vanguart: OpenAI's Earlier Foray into Branded Watches
This isn't OpenAI's first venture into branded timepieces. The company previously collaborated with Tudor, a brand affiliated with Rolex, to produce 400 OpenAI-branded watches. These earlier pieces featured the company's logo along with the poignant phrase “Good Research Takes Time” inscribed on the back.
Silicon Valley's Growing Embrace of Luxury Watches
The trend of tech companies creating limited-edition luxury watches extends beyond OpenAI. Giants like Meta, Amazon, and Adobe have also explored similar collaborations, highlighting an increasing overlap between Silicon Valley culture and the world of high-end watch collecting. Some of these technology-branded models have even commanded significant premiums in the resale market, underscoring their appeal as status symbols and collectible items within the tech community.
These luxury timepieces serve as more than just accessories; they are tangible representations of a company's culture, ambitions, and the identity of its leaders and enthusiasts, bringing the abstract pursuit of AGI down to the tangible, personal scale of a wrist-worn statement.
