Reclaim Phone Storage: How Google Maps Offline Data & Cache Eat Space

· · 3 min read

Google Maps can silently consume significant phone storage through downloaded offline maps, cached data, and location Timeline information. Learn simple steps to identify and clear this unnecessary data, freeing up valuable space on your device.

Is your smartphone constantly running low on storage? While photos, videos, and messaging apps are common culprits, Google Maps could be a surprising, quiet consumer of your device's memory. The popular navigation application accumulates data through several features, potentially taking up gigabytes of space without you realizing it.

Offline maps, extensive location history stored in your Timeline, and accumulated cached data are the primary ways Google Maps can bloat its footprint on your phone. Fortunately, reviewing and clearing this data is straightforward and doesn't require uninstalling the app.

Identify and Clear Google Maps Storage Hogs

Before considering deleting cherished photos or upgrading your phone's storage, take a few minutes to check Google Maps. Here’s how to pinpoint and remove the data it’s storing.

1. Manage Downloaded Offline Maps

If you've ever saved maps for specific regions or cities to use without an internet connection, these can be substantial. Regularly review and delete any offline maps you no longer need.

  • Open the Google Maps app.
  • Tap your profile picture (usually in the top right corner).
  • Select Offline maps.
  • Review the list of saved areas. Tap the three-dot menu next to a map you wish to remove and choose Delete.

This is often the quickest way to free up a large chunk of storage, especially if you've downloaded maps for past travels.

2. Review Google Maps Timeline Data

Google Maps' Timeline feature logs your visited locations and routes, storing this information locally on your device. While useful for recalling past journeys, years of history can add up.

  • Consider whether older location data needs to remain on your device.
  • If you wish to preserve your Timeline history, ensure you back it up to Google's servers before deleting local data.
  • For Android users, clearing app data can affect Timeline. For iPhones, go to Google Maps > profile picture > Settings > About & terms > Clear application data.

3. Clear Google Maps Cache

Like many apps, Google Maps caches frequently accessed information like search results, directions, and map tiles to improve performance. Over time, this cache can grow significantly.

  • For Android devices:
  1. Go to your phone's Settings.
  2. Tap Apps or Apps & Notifications.
  3. Find and select Maps.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Choose Clear cache. (The exact menu names may vary slightly by phone model and Android version.)
For iPhone devices:
  1. Open the Google Maps app.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Select About & terms.
  5. Tap Clear application data to remove cached information.

By regularly performing these simple maintenance steps, you can prevent Google Maps from silently consuming excessive phone storage and keep your device running smoothly.
