Qualcomm Unveils Next-Gen AI Chips
Qualcomm has officially launched its new flagship smartphone processors, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, at the annual Snapdragon Summit. These advanced system-on-chips (SoCs) are engineered on a cutting-edge 2nm process technology, promising to deliver a premium experience and powerful agentic AI capabilities to upcoming smartphones.
"By designing two innovative platforms, we're giving OEMs greater choice as we collectively shape the capabilities of the next generation of intelligent, personalized, mobile experiences," stated Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
Advanced Architecture for Enhanced Performance
Both the 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chips share a robust foundational architecture. They integrate Qualcomm’s custom 64-bit Oryon CPU, featuring two Prime cores clocked at up to 5.0 GHz and six Performance cores reaching up to 4.0 GHz, supported by 16 MB of Qualcomm Oryon Flex Cache. This configuration is designed to efficiently handle demanding computing tasks, multitasking, and data processing.
Graphics processing is managed by an upgraded Adreno GPU, while a reengineered Hexagon NPU is dedicated to accelerating on-device AI workloads. The chips also support up to 24GB LPDDR5x/6 RAM with memory speeds of up to 5,300 MHz, alongside UFS 5.0 storage for fast data access.
Significant Performance and AI Gains
Qualcomm highlights substantial performance improvements across the new series. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 boasts a 10% increase in CPU performance and a 37% improvement in power efficiency. It also delivers 35% better graphics performance and a 14% boost in NPU capabilities for AI tasks.
For even more demanding applications, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 steps up with a 13% improvement in CPU performance, a 44% increase in GPU performance, and a significant 35% rise in NPU performance, ensuring stronger AI processing power.
Revolutionary On-Device AI Capabilities
A key focus of the new Snapdragon chips is their advanced on-device AI. They incorporate new sensing hubs capable of running AI models with up to 200 million parameters. This local AI processing enhances responsiveness, safeguards user privacy, and optimizes power efficiency.
Qualcomm states that these chips will enable features like a "Personal Scribe," allowing smartphones to capture and process voice notes or conversations directly on the device. Furthermore, the chips can build a "usage-based memory," enabling phones to learn user interaction patterns and suggest automated tasks, leading to a more personalized mobile experience.
Flagship Smartphones to Feature New Chips
Several leading smartphone manufacturers have already confirmed plans to integrate the new Snapdragon chips into their upcoming devices. Motorola has announced its new Motorola Signature 27 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Xiaomi has also confirmed that its forthcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro series flagships will utilize the new Snapdragon processors, with more announcements from other brands expected in the coming months.
