PM Modi's Instagram Engagement Jumps 290% as Politics Targets Gen Z Feed

· · 2 min read

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Instagram engagement surged by nearly 290% following a Gen Z student protest. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also saw significant growth, indicating a strategic shift by Indian politicians to connect with younger voters on social media platforms.

Indian political leaders are experiencing a dramatic surge in Instagram engagement, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's average engagement per post skyrocketing by nearly 290%. This significant shift comes as politicians increasingly pivot their communication strategies to target Generation Z, particularly after a major student protest in July 2026.

Leaders Embrace Gen Z Platforms

Data Beings, a social listening and analytics firm, tracked engagement metrics for key political figures and parties. Their findings reveal that leader-first content, such as PM Modi's late-night Reels and Rahul Gandhi's Ask Me Anything (AMA) sessions with students, is now driving far greater engagement than traditional party handles.

Prime Minister Modi's average Instagram engagement saw a remarkable increase from 1.19 million to 4.63 million per post, representing a 289.9% rise. Similarly, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi's average engagement grew by 180.7%, climbing from 152,000 to 426,000 per post. In stark contrast, the official accounts for the Congress party and the BJP saw more modest follower growth of 43.4% and 37.1%, respectively.

The Catalyst: A Student Protest

The strategic shift towards Instagram was largely prompted by a significant student protest on July 20, 2026. Organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), the demonstration at Jantar Mantar and Parliament drew thousands of Gen Z individuals, demanding accountability over national exam paper leaks and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest, marked by clashes, highlighted the growing political awareness and organizational power of young Indians on social platforms.

In the aftermath, India's political class recognized Instagram as a crucial battleground for future election outcomes. Leaders have since adopted formats that resonate with Gen Z's content consumption habits—short, visual, and interactive. This approach transforms political communication from a broadcast model into a more conversational and direct engagement.

Personality-Driven Politics on the Rise

The data underscores a clear trend: personality-driven political communication generates considerably more Instagram engagement than institutional party communication. PM Modi, who already commanded substantial engagement, has seen his lead widen dramatically, while Rahul Gandhi has also effectively tapped into this youth-centric approach. This indicates a broader understanding among political figures that connecting directly with younger demographics through engaging, platform-native content is essential for modern political outreach.
