PM Modi: India to Add 5-8 Semiconductor Plants in Next 7-8 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India's plans to establish 5-8 new semiconductor manufacturing plants over the next seven to eight years. Speaking on the 80th Independence Day, he noted three existing plants are already operational and exporting chips.

On India's 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ambitious plans to significantly expand the nation's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Speaking from the historic Red Fort, PM Modi revealed that India aims to establish an additional five to eight semiconductor plants within the next seven to eight years, building on the three facilities already operational and exporting chips.

"In today’s digital world and the age of technology, we understand the importance of chips," PM Modi stated, underscoring their critical role in everything from electronic goods and medical equipment to transportation systems. He emphasized that without these vital components, the global technological landscape could grind to a halt, making self-reliance in the semiconductor sector a national imperative.

Strengthening India's Chip Ecosystem

The Prime Minister highlighted India's proactive steps towards achieving self-sufficiency in chip production. The announcement builds on the foundation laid by existing plants, which have already begun contributing to global supply chains by exporting domestically produced semiconductors.

This push for semiconductor independence is a cornerstone of India's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) vision, aiming to transform the nation into a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India). The government's strategy extends beyond mere manufacturing, focusing on creating a robust, end-to-end ecosystem for chip development.

Semicon 2.0: A Comprehensive Strategy

In July, the Union Cabinet approved the comprehensive ₹1.27 lakh crore "Semicon 2.0" program. This initiative goes beyond establishing new fabrication units, encompassing a broad spectrum of activities crucial for a thriving semiconductor industry. Key areas of focus include:

  • Chip design and intellectual property development
  • Manufacturing equipment and materials production
  • Advanced packaging technologies
  • Dedicated research and development efforts
  • Cultivating a specialized talent pool

The overarching goal of Semicon 2.0 is to reduce India’s reliance on imported chips and critical manufacturing inputs. By fostering domestic companies and encouraging them to move up the value chain from assembly to high-end design and manufacturing, India seeks to strengthen its electronics supply chain, attract global investments, and secure a more prominent role in the global semiconductor industry.

With the first new semiconductor fabrication plant under this expanded program anticipated to commence operations by 2028, India is positioning itself as a significant player in the global chip manufacturing landscape, ensuring its digital future and technological sovereignty.
