Phone Storage Full? Photos & App Cache Are Top Culprits, Account for 83% of Issues

· · 3 min read

A recent poll reveals photos and app cache are the leading causes of full phone storage, accounting for 83% of issues. Discover simple steps to reclaim significant space on your device without sacrificing important files or apps.

Is your smartphone constantly displaying "storage almost full" warnings? You're not alone. While many users instinctively delete cherished photos or uninstall apps, a recent poll highlights that two primary culprits account for a staggering 83% of phone storage problems: large photo and video collections, and accumulating app cache.

Photos and Videos: The Biggest Individual Storage Drain

According to a Tom's Guide reader poll, 42% of respondents identified extensive photo and video libraries as the main reason their phone storage was full. These media files, especially high-resolution images and long videos, consume significant space.

However, freeing up space doesn't necessarily mean deleting your memories:

  • For iPhone users: Navigate to Settings > Apps > Photos and enable the "Optimise Storage" option. This moves original, full-resolution files to iCloud while keeping smaller, device-friendly versions accessible on your phone.
  • For Android users: Open Google Photos, tap your profile icon, and select "Free Up Space." This uploads original files to Google Photos cloud storage and removes local copies, ensuring your memories are safe and accessible.

App Cache: The Hidden Clutter Accumulator

The second major storage hog, cited by 41% of poll participants, is hidden app cache. Applications like TikTok, Instagram, web browsers (Chrome, Safari), and streaming services frequently store temporary files to improve performance. Over time, this cache can balloon into several gigabytes.

Clearing app cache is a simple way to reclaim space:

  • On Android: Go to Settings > Apps, select a specific app, then tap Storage > Clear Cache. Repeat this for storage-heavy apps.
  • On iPhone: Some apps offer an in-built option to clear cached data within their own settings. For others, deleting and reinstalling the app might be necessary to clear its accumulated data (ensure your data is backed up or linked to a cloud account first). For Safari, go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

Don't Forget Downloads and Old Games

Beyond photos and cache, other contributors to full storage include forgotten downloads and abandoned mobile games. Offline media, from services like Netflix, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, accounted for 9% of storage issues. Regularly check the download sections within these apps and remove content you no longer need. Features like Netflix's Smart Downloads can also automatically manage watched episodes.

Old mobile games were responsible for another 8% of storage problems. Many modern games can occupy 2GB to 5GB each. Deleting titles you haven't played in months can quickly free up substantial space. Often, your game progress is linked to a cloud account, allowing you to reinstall and resume later.

By focusing on these key areas—optimizing photos, clearing app cache, and managing downloads and old games—you can effectively reclaim significant storage on your smartphone without resorting to drastic measures.
