OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens with Study Mode & Parental Controls

· · 3 min read

OpenAI has introduced an age-specific version of ChatGPT for users under 18, featuring a Study Mode for guided learning and new parental controls. This version includes enhanced safeguards against sensitive content and tools for academic assistance.

OpenAI Introduces Age-Specific ChatGPT for Younger Users

OpenAI has officially launched a specialized version of its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, tailored for users under the age of 18. Dubbed 'ChatGPT for Teens,' this new iteration aims to provide an age-appropriate experience by integrating built-in safeguards, learning-focused tools, and enhanced parental controls. The rollout began globally on August 18, 2026, for eligible accounts on both free and paid personal plans.

How ChatGPT for Teens Works

Activating ChatGPT for Teens is designed to be seamless. Upon signing in, the system automatically determines if an account belongs to a user under 18. This determination relies on three key signals: the age provided during account creation, any verified age information, and OpenAI's proprietary in-house age-prediction system.

While retaining the full conversational capabilities of the standard chatbot, ChatGPT for Teens incorporates additional layers and add-ons specifically designed for younger users. OpenAI states that these include "tools and settings for learning, creativity, and everyday life," ensuring a safe and productive environment for its younger audience.

Key Learning Features: Study Mode & Homework Reminders

A standout feature of ChatGPT for Teens is its innovative Study Mode. This tool is designed to assist students by guiding them through problems with interactive questions and step-by-step explanations, fostering deeper understanding rather than simply providing answers. It's an intuitive way for students to tackle complex subjects.

Complementing Study Mode are Homework Reminders, which offer additional tools to help students grasp and retain concepts more effectively through quizzes and visual learning aids. Both teens and their parents have the flexibility to set specific times when Study Mode automatically activates, promoting disciplined study habits.

Enhanced Safety and Parental Controls

The teen version of ChatGPT comes with significant additional safeguards, particularly in areas considered high-risk for minors. These protections are designed to mitigate exposure to sensitive or potentially harmful content, including topics such as violence, self-harm, eating disorders, and sexually explicit material. OpenAI emphasizes its commitment to creating an age-appropriate digital space.

For parents and guardians, OpenAI has introduced robust Parental Controls. These allow guardians to link to their children’s accounts to manage certain ChatGPT settings, such as setting 'Quiet Hours' during which the chatbot should not be used. Parents will also receive safety notifications in limited, high-risk situations. Importantly, OpenAI has clarified that "Parental controls do not let a parent or guardian read or monitor the teen’s conversations," maintaining user privacy.

Furthermore, the system will provide frequent reminders for teens to take breaks if they have been using ChatGPT for extended periods, promoting healthy digital habits.

Global Rollout and Availability

ChatGPT for Teens commenced its global rollout on August 18, 2026. OpenAI is implementing a phased approach, with full availability in regions like Australia expected by September 8. The company plans to continue expanding access to eligible accounts worldwide over the subsequent weeks, making this specialized AI tool available to a broader young audience.
